Seascape in music

It is difficult to find in nature anything more beautiful and majestic than the sea element. Constantly changing, boundless, alluring into the distance, iridescent with different colors, sounding - it attracts and fascinates, it is gratifying to contemplate it. The image of the sea was sung by poets, artists painted the sea, the melodies and rhythms of its waves formed the musical lines of many composers.

Two symphonic poems about the sea

Passionate fascination with the beauties of the sea by the French impressionist composer C. Debussy was reflected in a number of his works: "The Island of Joy", "Sirens", "Sails". The symphonic poem "The Sea" was written by Debussy almost from life - impressed by the contemplation of the Mediterranean Sea and the ocean, as the composer himself admitted.

The sea wakes up (part 1 - “From Dawn to Noon at Sea”), sea waves gently splash, gradually accelerating their run, the sun's rays make the sea sparkle with bright colors. This is followed by the "Games of the waves" - serene and joyful. The contrasting ending of the poem - “The Dialogue of the Wind and the Sea” draws a dramatic atmosphere in which both the elements of the raging rule.

Seascape in the works of M.K. Churlionis, a Lithuanian composer and artist, is represented in sounds and colors. In his symphonic poem “The Sea,” the bizarre changes of the sea element are reflected flexibly, now majestic and calm, now gloomy and frantic. And in the cycle of his paintings "Sonata of the Sea", each of the 3 art canvases has the name of parts of the sonata form. Moreover, the artist transferred to painting not only the names, but also built the logic of the development of artistic material according to the laws of drama of the sonata form. The picture "Allegro" is full of dynamics: raging waves, sparkling pearl and amber splashes, a seagull flying above the sea. Mysterious "Andante" shows a mysterious city, frozen at the bottom of the sea, slowly sinking a sailboat, which stood in the hand of an imaginary colossus. The majestic finale is a harsh, huge and impetuous wave hanging over small boats.

Genre contrasts

Seascape is present in all existing musical genres. The display in the music of the sea element is an integral part of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. His Symphonic Scene "Scheherazade", the operas "Sadko" and "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" are full of beautifully created pictures of the sea. Each of the three guests in the opera "Sadko" sings about his sea, and it seems to be cold and formidable - at the Varyag, now laps mysteriously and gently in the guest story from India, then plays with shining highlights off the coast of Venice. It is interesting that the characters of the opera characters presented surprisingly correspond to the pictures of the sea they have drawn, and the seascape created in music is intertwined with the complex world of human experiences.

A. Petrov is a famous master of cinematic music. Not one generation of moviegoers loved the movie "Amphibian Man". In many ways, he owes his success to music behind the scenes. A. Petrov found juicy means of musical expression to create a picture of the mysterious underwater life with all its bright colors, smooth movements of sea creatures. Strongly contrasted with the sea idyll rebellious terrestrial sound.

The beautiful, boundless sea sings its eternal, marvelous song, and, caught up by the creative genius of the composer, it acquires new facets of being in music.
